Nederlands Dans Theater
Season 2019/2020 marks the 60th anniversary of Nederlands Dans Theater (NDT). To celebrate this momentous occasion the company has compiled a programme highlighting NDT’s rich history and some of its most boundary pushing works as well as honouring a new generation of dance makers in line with the company’s prolific character. For the first time in NDT history, house choreographers Sol León and Paul Lightfoot and both associate choreographers Crystal Pite and Marco Goecke, jointly create a work for both NDT 1 and NDT 2 for a unique, full-evening performance titled Kunstkamer. Later in the season, iconic pieces such as Situation ((1970) by Hans van Manen, Black Milk (1992) and George & Zalman (2006) by Ohad Naharin are revived on the NDT stage in different programmes. In Sometimes, I wonder, a new generation of dancers will perform Bella Figura (1995), Claude Pascal (2002) and Vanishing Twin (2008) in an evening dedicated to Jiří Kylián’s ground-breaking oeuvre. There will be a total of ten world premieres by choreographers such as Medhi Walerski, Edward Clug, Marco Goecke, Crystal Pite, Yoann Bourgeois, and Damien Jalet, among others. With this unique season NDT pays tribute to the six decade long trajectory that the company has gone through while simultaneously looking forward to new and exciting futures. Tribute to Hans van Manen
As part of TranscenDanses, the Théâtre des Champs Élysées welcomes the Dutch National Ballet (also known as Het National Ballet) for four evenings in tribute to its recently deceased choreographer Hans van Manen.
A visionary choreographer, considered one of the great masters of 20th-century ballet, Hans van Manen redefined the landscape of neoclassical and contemporary dance with his refined, elegant style and formidable musical precision. A major figure in Dutch dance, he played an essential role in the history of the country's two major institutions: the Nederlands Dans Theater and the Dutch National Ballet, where he left a lasting mark on the repertoire as a resident choreographer.
Author of over 150 works, Hans van Manen remained closely associated with the Dutch National Ballet until the end of his life. The company is now ensuring the transmission of his work and will present: Adagio Hammerklavier, Solo, Frank Bridge Variations, Two pieces for Het, and 5 Tango’s. Five pieces that span his universe, between suspended tension, virtuosity, rigor, sensuality, and energy. Five works that trace the evolution of the celebrated choreographer's career.
The Dutch National Ballet thus wishes to carry on his legacy and offer the Parisian public the unique opportunity to discover the full diversity of his repertoire.
