our programs › Renée Fleming sings Massenet's Thaïs at the Met
Premiered in Paris in 1894, Jules Massenet's opera is adapted from a novel by Anatole France and features a very "fin de siècle" strand of orientalism: in 4th century AD Alexandria, the conversion to Christianity of the courtesan Thaïs symbolises the struggle between spirituality and sensuality. The part is ideally suited to Renée Fleming's voice. Costumes by Christian Lacroix.
