In spite of a mixed reception when it was first performed at the Scala in Milan in 1904, Madama Butterfly soon became a classic. Puccini, at the height of his musical powers, tells the story of a young geisha, drawn to suicide by unrequited love. Film director Anthony Minghella portrays a fairy tale Japan.
