Two young men, Ferrando and Guglielmo, make a bet with the disillusioned Don Alfonso: their lovers, Fiordiligi and Dorabella are unswervingly faithful. After pretending they must leave for battle, Ferrando and Guglielmo return in disguise. Each is planning to win the affections of the other's lover. The experiment is successful beyong hope: after a heroic struggle, both young women give in. Don Alfonso has won his bet. The final reconciliation will have a bitter-sweet taste...
It was while staying at a hotel by the beach in Santa Monica, California, a few years ago that Adrian Noble first had the idea for this new production of "Cosi fan tutte", the opera with which he started his Mozart/Da Ponte trilogy for the Opéra de Lyon in 2006.
"I was sitting there, looking at the skateboarders on the pavement, and I thought Santa Monica would be a perfect setting for "Cosi"" Noble recalls. "Le Nozze di Figaro" and "Don Giovanni" followed in 2007 and 2009. "The most important thing for the stage director was to capture the deep and tumultuous passions of a piece which deals mostly with young love, its sense of wonder and inconsistencies."
