Wim Wenders will not be going to Bayreuth
It had been announced as the highlight of the 2013 Bayreuth Festival: Wagner's Ring was going to be produced by the great German film director Wim Wenders. The idea was immensely attractive to the aficionados. But the author of Paris, Texas will not be involved in the project. Wim Wenders wanted not only to stage the 15 hour-long epic at the Festspielhaus, but also to film it in 3D (as in his latest film, Pina). This turned out to be too expensive for the two directors of the festival, Eva and Katharina Wagner, who decided to end things there. The question is now, who will take over? Katharina Wagner could very well direct her great-grandfather's Ring herself.
Sony Classical: three new signings
Sony Classical is on the offensive - the label has just announced three additions to its prestigious list of signed artists: Pianists Leif Ove Andsnes (who is leaving EMI) and David Greilsamer (formerly with the French label Naïve), and the Emerson Quartet (a major star on the Deutsche Grammophon catalogue). Many projects are in the offing, Sony has already announced a recording of the Beethoven piano concertos with Leif Ove Andsnes and the Mahler Chamber Orchestra.
James Levine leaves the Boston Symphony Orchestra
The ailments affecting the conductors of several American orchestras are making the headlines in the musical press. A few days ago, Riccardo Muti fainted during a rehearsal with the Chicago Symphony, and now James Levine is stepping down from his position as musical director of the Boston Symphony, also for health reasons. Since his appointment at the head of the orchestra in 2004, Levine, who is 67, has spent more time in hospital being treated for his back and kidneys than in the concert hall. The frequent cancellations of concerts and tours have affected his relationship with the members of the orchestra, as has the fact that Levine decided not to leave his position as musical director of the New York Metropolitan Opera. His resignation will come into effect on 1 September 2011. But according to the orchestra’s manager, it is too early to appoint a successor - The Boston Symphony, one of the “Big Five” that have established the world-wide reputation of American orchestras, is going to take its time looking for its 15th musical director.
Plácido Domingo : un jeune ténor de 70 ans
Après avoir incarné plus de 130 rôles, chanté lors de 3500 représentations ou concerts et enregistré plus de 100 disques, que reste-t-il à faire à un ténor ? Ne posez pas la question à Plácido Domingo qui fête ce 21 janvier ses 70 ans sans aucune envie de quitter la scène. A un âge où la plupart des chanteurs ont pris depuis longtemps leur retraite, le ténor espagnol continue à faire des projets car comme il dit « il faudrait trois carrières pour chanter tout le répertoire ». Tandis qu’il se produit en ce moment dans Iphigénie en Tauride Gluck au Teatro Real de Madrid, les hommages se succèdent en Espagne et Deutsche Grammophon lui offre trois cadeaux d’anniversaire : « The Domingo Story », livre-disque en 3CD qui raconte ce parcours hors-pair ; « The Opera Collection », coffret de 26 CD qui regroupe 13 opéras emblématiques de sa carrière ; enfin, nouveau titre à sa discographie, l’enregistrement de Fedora d'Umberto Giordano où il partage la vedette avec Angela Gheorghiu dans le rôle titre. Mezzo sera aussi de la fête le mois de février avec un Tamerlano de Haendel (le 15 février à 20h30) et la zarzuela Luisa Fernanda (le 1er mars à 20h30), deux spectacles captés au Teatro Real de Madrid, et le Cyrano de Bergerac d’Alfano enregistré au Palau de les Arts de Valence (le 19 février à 20h30) ¡ Feliz cumpleaños !

Rolando Villazón prend des risques pour Werther
Le lundi 24 janvier 2011 sera une journée particulière dans la vie de Rolando Villazón. L’Opéra de Lyon affiche se soir-là Werther de Jules Massenet mais pour une fois le ténor n’incarnera pars le rôle du héros romantique. Dans cette nouvelle production il a préféré s’occuper de la mise en scène. Un coup d’essai ou le début d’une deuxième carrière pour un chanteur qui a connu ces dernières années quelques problèmes avec sa voix au point d’être obligé à prendre des longs congés ? Son pari est loin d’être sans risques : en voulant présenter l’œuvre « pour des gens qui vivent en 2011 », il a fait appel au clown Nicola Rae pour l’aider dans la « mise en mouvement » de ce Werther. A voir donc… et à entendre, car la distribution est elle aussi pleine de promesses : le jeune ténor Arturo Chacon-Cruz pour le rôle-titre, la mezzo-soprano Karine Deshayes (Charlotte), Lionel Lhote (Albert), Alain Vernhes (Le Bailli) et Anne-Catherine Gillet (Sophie). Leopold Hager dirige l’Orchestre de l’Opéra National de Lyon.

Wim Wenders à Bayreuth ?
L’édition 2013 du Festival de Bayreuth aura un goût particulier. C’est en effet cette année qu’on fêtera la naissance de Richard Wagner à Leipzig, un 22 mai 1813. On attend beaucoup ce que la nouvelle directrice artistique du Festival, Katharina Wagner, va offrir pour marquer comme il se doit le bicentenaire du compositeur. Elle a déjà commencé en tout cas à mettre des noms sur son affiche. Le quotidien Die Welt a révélé que Wim Wenders pourrait bien être chargé de la nouvelle production du Ring du bicentenaire. Pari risqué : si le cinéaste accepte la proposition, ce serait la première fois qu’il met en scène un opéra. Dans la fosse, il aurait comme partenaire le jeune chef Kirill Petrenko, une des valeurs en hausse de la direction d’orchestre, pour l’accompagner dans cette aventure de quinze heures.
